Here is a list of possible coaches for further screening. On the list are those mentioned in various threads and a couple of new names. We have not discussed assistant coaches from Liberty, but bios for both the OC and DC are mentioned based on TF's post that we might look at other faith-based schools. I didn't put Harding's coach on the list because he is retiring.
I added links to football coaching staffs from two Texas P5 programs where the HC has been fired or is clearly on the hot seat. During times of transition, position coaches who don't find a place to land at a big school might consider a HC gig at the FCS level. It's happened before. I also put links to the coaching staffs of a couple of schools that have hired former Texas HS head coaches in the past couple of years. My thinking is if they like head coaching a move to an FCS school might be attractive. One interesting name we have not discussed, Dean Wilkinson from TAMUK. He was CSU Pueblo's OC when they were at the height of their success and has turned TAMUK around. If they don't move to D1, he's be one to watch closely.
Some on the list are much better fits than others. Most require additional screening: Is Phil Longo a man of faith, for example? Is Kendall Briles "clean" in terms of the scandal? Would the HC's at either CSU P or NWMST consider moving to Texas since they are both long time or life long residents where they are currently coaching? There are similar questions about everyone on the list. Questions that we have no way of answering.
There are some interesting possibilities here and many would require a "work around," an alternative way of addressing areas where they may not meet all of the criteria for an ideal candidate. NoTexas HS football network? Hire a staff with connections and let the new coach aggressively pursue relationships after he's here. Some are not obvious fits but upon closer look, there may be something there after all. Bob Shipley, case in point. I am very much against hiring a high school coach. It just does not work out without college level experience. But wait. Shipley has coached at ACU and spent a couple of years on the staff down in Austin under Mack Brown.
One more thought. This runs counter to what I believe is fair, right and just, but one very practical way to counter the negative repercussions for the football program of the recent racial incident on campus is to look closely at qualified African American coaches that are otherwise qualified. Not saying giving preference to anyone based on skin color is the right thing to do but it might be the smart move.
Anyway, we aren't on any official screening committee. At the end of the day, it is all for fun. But why don't we see if we can whittle our list down to a shorter list of guys who might make it to campus for an interview.....
