Ask UCF if going unbeaten gets you in the playoffs. Nope. At the end of the day it’s about the TV audience. Since ESPN controls the SEC, expect 2 SEC teams and two others. Ohio State with 1 loss and OU if they win out. There is no doubt with only four teams making the playoffs, a team like SMU, Wake Forest or UTSA could definitely go undefeated and never crack the top four teams. I do like your picks, but Cincinatti is in if they win out for sure. What’s frustrating to me is that for SMU to win out they will need to beat Cincinnati, the number two team. That’s still won’t be enough to earn them a spot.

SMU beating LA Tech by only two points, 39-37 is not as impressive as UTSA's 45-16 victory over LA Tech last weekend.

After week 9, there are only 6 undefeated teams left - Georgia, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Michigan St, Wake Forest, and UTSA.
The one loss teams still with a shot at making the playoffs in my opinion are Alabama, Ohio St, Oregon, Michigan and Notre Dame.
Of the undefeated teams, it is doubtful that UTSA can make the playoffs even if they win out. So realistically there are 10 teams still in the running for the four team playoff.
The first official ranking comes out Tuesday evening.

First college football playoff rankings.
1. Georgia (8-0)
2. Alabama (7-1)
3. Michigan State (8-0)
4. Oregon (7-1)
5. Ohio State (7-1)
6. Cincinnati (8-0)
7. Michigan (7-1)
8. Oklahoma (9-0)
9. Wake Forest (8-0)
10. Notre Dame (7-1)
11. Oklahoma State (7-1)
12. Baylor (7-1)
13. Auburn (6-2)
14. Texas A&M (6-2)
15. BYU (7-2)
16. Ole Miss (6-2)
17. Mississippi State (5-3)
18. Kentucky (6-2)
19. NC State (6-2)
20. Minnesota (6-2)
21. Wisconsin (5-3)
22. Iowa (6-2)
23. Fresno State (7-2)
24. San Diego State (7-1)
25. Pitt (6-2)
Most interesting seedings include 2. Alabama, 6. Cincinatti, 8. Oklahoma
Many are not happy that a one loss SEC team Alabama is #2 over 5 other undefeated teams.
Cincinatti gets no respect #6 vs #2 in the AP and Coaches Polls.
Oklahoma at #8 Vs #4 in the AP and Coaches Polls.
UTSA undefeated and not ranked in the top 25

Based on these initial rankings, it is clear that if Alabama beats Georgia in the SEC, both teams with a loss will be 1 and 2 in the final rankings. One team from the Big Ten will almost surely make the playoffs whoever wins out of (Michigan St, Ohio St, and Michigan) which leaves one of Oregon, Cincinatti, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Wake Forest as the final team. If Georgia wins another of the five final teams listed will make the playoffs, too.
That is how I see it, but obviously things can change.

It ain’t over till it’s over! That said, I agree with UGA #1 as they’ve dominated all they’ve played (Best Win: @ Auburn), Bama #2 as they only lost to the ags (Best Win: @ Florida), Michigan State #3 (Best Win: beat their Big Brother) and Oregon #4 as they won at the Shoe ( Best Win: @ The). Have no problem with how they ranked #’s 5-7 as The lost @ home to a PAC-12 team, Cincy beat ND, not The, on the road and Zero hasn’t beat anyone (UT’s down) sand has barely beaten everyone. Meanwhile, written knowing full well it’ll all change this time next week.

If Georgia beats Alabama, the Tide is out. If MSU beats OSU, the Buckeyes are out. To have any chance, OU needs to win out against Baylor, Iowa St, and Okie St then beat one of those teams in the Big12 championship. Long shot even for s Sooner fan like me.
Weirdest scenario, GA loses to ALA in SEC title game. OSU beats MSU. Oregon, Cincy, and OU win out. Who’s the top 4 now?

Alabama and Georgia are #2 and #1 now. If Alabama wins that order would be reversed, Alabama #1 and Georgia #2. Oregon is #4 now and if they win out would be #3 or #4. They did beat Ohio St straight up in Ohio. Ohio St is #5 now. Ohio St would be #4 or #3. They would need to beat #7 Michigan, #3 Michigan St, and a Big 10 Championship opponent (the toughest remaining schedule of all contenders). Cincy and and most likely Oklahoma would be left out with 0 losses, while four 1 lose teams would make the playoffs.
Cincy has no current top 25 opponents on their schedule and would deservedly miss out. Oklahoma would be undefeated with wins over #11 Oklahoma St, #12 Baylor and a Big 12 Championship opponent. They would have a good arguement to jump a team above them that wins out (Oregon or Ohio St). This is indeed a worse case scenario for the NCAA and would speed up the calls for an expanded playoff system.

This is starting to look worse than the BCS format and the Poll Era format. I’m finally in favor of expansion. Maybe college football should just allow schools to start claiming MNCs again.

It’s time four super conferences to produce champions that automatically qualify for the Final Four. Everybody else, including ACU, plays non-conference “$-ball” and FCS title.

Here again, this is just my personal opinion also and there will probably be some other upsets that throw this scenario out of wack. But right now Ohio St is rated 5th while Cincy is rated 6th. Ohio St is already ranked above Cincy. There is no way Cincy will jump them finishing out with no teams presently ranked, while Ohio St. finishes out with top 10 teams (Michigan, Michigan St and the Big 10 West Division winner) assuming both win out. If Oklahoma wins out and all other playoff teams have 1 loss, they would possibly be able to jump over Ohio St or Oregon.

In baseball and basketball, the top 64 and 68 teams respectively get to compete for the championship. Top 10 teams are never excluded from the playoffs like they are in football. They just need to expand the football playoffs to a minimum of eight teams, but preferably more.
