There is another possibility--KP's defense at ACU will not be playing the high powered offenses of Okla St, OU, Texas, Baylor, Iowa St, etc. Maybe the FCS equivalents will only score 20 pts per game. Might we be in the ball game with that scoring defense? I don't know. I'm pretty sure he will make adjustments but that doesn't really concern me. He's coming to ACU as the HC not the DC. I'm looking at his leadership to make the big difference and hoping for a good OC and DC to put a winning product on the field. (and yes I know that SFA scored vs Tech)

I think Dorrel would have liked to be North Dakota State and play smash mouth football. He was never able to recruit the linemen needed for that though. We'll see how KP does with recruiting.

Bucfan, I actually think he had it this year. D. Simmons, C. James and R. Moore were great additions. I think it was the most talent he had upfront since he started. We always tried to run sideways, not up the middle. Then, that RB would get a carry and it was like, well, he must be tired, put someone new in. The next play would be a 2 yard screen pass or a jet sweep. It was bad offense, really bad.

(and yes I know that SFA scored vs Tech) This is probably the most important aspect to look at. The problem is that it is really difficult to find good analytics to measure defensive success. Points against is not the best stat. SP+ might be a good indicator, but not perfect. Think batting average in the MLB. A player in Denver will hit much better against a Rangers’ pitcher than against Kershaw in Seattle. This is exponentially difficult with over 130 teams with multiple offensive styles. KP also coached against high scoring offenses in the PAC 12, Oregon, Cal, USC. There was also a game against Tech with Patrick Mahomes while KP was at ASU. I also saw multiple 3OT games that skew the numbers. I mentioned earlier that Tech played a similar opponent as Cincinnati. They both played Houston. UH’s scoring was almost identical against both. To say Tech and ACU both played SFA doesn’t give much evidence to how well KP can coach. That’s the anecdote.

Anyone have an idea when we hear about new hires? I was expecting no later than lastnight, but now I am wondering if we get any announcements before KP ends his season at Tech.

Probably won't hear anything for awhile on assistant coaches. I'd rather him be very thorough then rush the process.

I'll say this again, did Texas Tech care about defense? Not really. They wanted to put points on the board. You can only win so many games with an air raid offense. I watched the North Dakota St/E. Tenn. St game on Saturday. What do both of those schools do; run the football. Can they throw it, yep! But they want to hit you in the mouth with the run game. North Dakota State is totally fine running the ball up and down the field and not throwing if they have to. That is what I hope we become. We need to be able to do both and do both well. It starts up front. One thing that really bothered me about this year's team; we would run the ball once with 1 RB and he would immediately come out and a new RB would come in. Why? Why not let him get the hot hand and run it again and again and again. For defense, you need big guys. Bogey said this a lot, we were too small. Will we be a 3-3-5 team? A 3-4-4 team? A 4-3-4 team? All of this will be interesting Dorrel tried to do this for years, I just hated the approach. Our run plays all seemed too slow developing, quarterback in the gun then handing off a counter run that took 2 seconds to develop never worked. Maybe what Dorrel had to choose from at NWMS made it easier to run that style than the recruiting provided him here. I don’t know offensive line play as I played defense, I just knew where to fit as a defender, but I know what I was watching was never quick hitting. I also felt like our lack of downfield passing limited our run game. That had been discussed since Dallas Sealey was here. I do know that we missed our chance when we had Tracy James and Billy Mc. Thunder and lightning that could stay fresh (if healthy). No idea what happened Dobbins but he never has it going this year.

I'll say this again, did Texas Tech care about defense? Not really. Exactly what you want to hear about the school who's defensive coordinator you just hired.

It may not be what you want to hear, but Tech cared a lot more about offense. Is that KP's fault? He helped send to LBers from Tech to the league, so I think he knows a bit about coaching.
Is it a homerun hire? Maybe, maybe not. Will it take time? Yep.
Kitten who did you realistically want ACU to hire?

Interesting that KP’s name came up during new Oregon football coach’s intro presser. In particular, in relating his career path, Dan Lanning described driving 13 hours from KC, MO, where he was a high school coach, to Pitt to interview for a GA opp on Todd Graham’s staff after being told by over phone by KP that “he might have a chance.”

Probably someone with stronger ties to TX and someone younger, more energetic, and offensive minded.
