I looked at D2Football.com and there are several teams listed as looking for games that first week. I am sure ACU staff already on it! Personally, I’d much rather play a WAC opponent twice than take on another D2 opponent, which would only serve to weaken our strength of schedule if we wind up with a good enough record to be considered for the playoffs.

Totally agree with you if we can work that out!

Obviously we did play Lamar twice last year so it is workable, but to replace two games Lamar and Incarnate Word will be a little more difficult.

I think you have to start with looking at all the Southland Conference schedules. Here is what I mean- Lamar and UIW were added back to the schedules of HBU, Northwestern St, Nicholls, etc. That likely means that those schools have to drop 2 games from their schedule.
We are scheduled to play Lamar on Sept 1 and UIW on Oct. 22
I'll throw out some possibilities- HBU plays Northern Colorado on Sept 3.
Nicholls plays South Alabama on Sept. 3
SELA plays Jacksonville St on Oct. 22
Northwestern St plays SE Missouri St on Oct. 22

Is that what you are thinking?

I looked at that as well, however, I don't think on the first weekend (Sept. 1-3), Northern Colorado will want to give up their home game to come to Abilene and vice versa for ACU going there. The same with South Alabama wanting to give up their home game that day.
We will have to find someone that wants to come here that first weekend (if we want to keep that as a home game of course).

The tough part might be keeping that first game a home game
Northern Colorado is scheduled to play HBU at home
Nicholls St plays at South Alabama
Jacksonville St plays at SELA
SE Missouri St plays at Northwestern St

We've also got Nov. 5 as an open date. So, I could see McNeese drop Eastern Illinois and we play EI them and create an open date on Oct. 22

The tough part might be keeping that first game a home game Northern Colorado is scheduled to play HBU at home Nicholls St plays at South Alabama Jacksonville St plays at SELA SE Missouri St plays at Northwestern St We might persuade Jax State to come here since they were scheduled for an away game anyway and we played Jax at their place last year. Also, if we switched date Eastern Ill was scheduled to play at McNeese so maybe they come here? The others would probably be a tough sell. South Alabama is an FBS game. I’d hate to add another FBS game to the schedule but that’s better than picking up a D2 team.

So, how can this enhanced relationship with the ASUN football-playing schools come to the rescue to fill on the 2 holes on the schedule?
I tell you who I fell sorry for -- even more than the ACU athletic staff -- is the ACU alumni office. They have been laboring for months to plan the opening week of school. The reason that ACU begged Lamar to come to Abilene on Thursday, Sept 1, is so the Friday and Saturday festivities could be focused on the opening of the renovated Moody Coliseum. It is will be more challenging to find an opponent to come to Abilene on that Thursday.

Another option to explore is working with our ASUN partners to promote inter divisional play. On a date two ASUn schools are scheduled to play, they would each agree to play WAC opponents rather than each other.
I certainly hope the WAC office is moving quickly to explore these and other options.

Score a big win for Zach Lassiter. Did not have to resort to bringing in a D-2 school and ACU still can have the big week planned for the first week of the school year. Should even have a good student turnout. Having this game in the time frame usually held for OOC games ends up being big. And, playing Lamar first should put ACU 1-0 after week 1.
