We are already qualified for R2 for a national research university, and if our plan for the future comes true, maybe we could go FBS -- BUT, I would like to be in a conference where we are not the door mats. There are some FBS conferences that might work, but maybe the best course is to grow with a WAC/ASUN alliance conference that spends some time to evolve to FBS, the same amount of time it takes us to fulfill our current plan for the future of the university. Growing into what FBS requires is better than rushing in. I think SHSU has rushed it and I fear Tarleton's wish is too ambitious.

I wasn’t aware we offer enough PhD’s to qualify.

SFA is saying the plan is to form a football only conference with the ASUN and move up in tandem to FBS.

Maybe we could join the Big 12. Why not think big?

Maybe we could join the Big 12. Why not think big? 13 is an unlucky number and I would be worried about the Big 13... (joke, and a poor one at that)

Isn't there a timeframe for CFP media contracts that ends at the end of 2024 that is pushing a lot of FCS schools to try and make the jump before that window closes? They won't get the multi-million dollar contracts but will be fairly larger than the FCS ones we all currently get.

I still don't think that either the CFP or the media outlets care one iota for anyone but the P5, that includes the upper part of the G5 excluding a couple of elite G5 programs. In their eyes, UTEP, JSU, MTSU, etc... are no different than NDSU, Montana, etc... I am not sure the push to go FBS is really going to pay off in the long run, either monetarily or with any more recognition or prestige. I could be wrong who knows. I don't think that the CFP is going to vote an entirely new conference in.

I am not sure the push to go FBS is really going to pay off in the long run, either monetarily or with any more recognition or prestige. I could be wrong who knows. I don't think that the CFP is going to vote an entirely new conference in. Everyone would like to cash in on TV marketing dollars, and things are changing fast. It remains unclear that a school can receive any of that for football if they stay at an FCS size. The challenge, of course, is that you have to spend at much greater scale to be in the FBS orbit--which is beyond the reach of most FCS programs. And spending dollars like Akron, North Texas, or Liberty doesn't move the marketing needle all that much. But if the upper tier schools break away from the FBS to do their own thing, what little TV money that exists for FCS programs might evaporate. To keep pace with this evolving marketing game, programs may be forced to ante up. And gambling is a high stakes affair. The mighty North Dakota State, which has invested far more for longer than any team at the FCS level, is hemorrhaging students. Their financial shortfall as an institution is immense. And the truth is we might have to spend more than them to chase these dollars and the national spotlight.

That answered my question on AP's announcement, but I thought it might have been in anticipation of the WAC-SUN move. My biggest question still stems around the CFP side and the media contracts even if the NCAA votes to allow it. My smaller question would be that if a Football only conference is such an issue, just make the new WAC-SUN conference across the board with all sports. There may be issues with sports that are affiliate members of other conferences though. I didn't see ACU pushing for FBS. Still, I don't see Lassiter not working with other schools if there is a viable pathway forward to keep us in the best position we can be.

I saw this a few minutes ago and thought it was the WAC +4 ASUN, but after reading it again, it seems it would be a 14 team conference. I wonder who the 4 would be?
