Golf spring season officially begins on Monday, Feb 20 in Houston. I think our top 3 will be Zane Heusel, Karson Grigsby and Thomas Buisson. Positions 4 and 5 will probably be up for grabs between the other 6 players on the team and may be interchangeable. Logan Diomede and Charlie Jackson have the most experience but expect Brian Comegys, Jaime Lewis and Joris Spanger to push for spots. Greg Hoyeau will be a wild card. He could be a player but I'm not sure yet. I know coach Shaw appreciates the hard work that Joris Spanger puts into improving his game. He made strides in the fall. He may make noise in the spring. We need a solid tournament lineup to defend our WAC crown.

Round one of our 1st spring tourney is complete. We started slowly, got back into the game in our middle holes, then finished very poorly. Starting the 2nd round better. Surprise of the tourney so far is Greg Hoyeau Fr. from France who didn't play in but one tourney in the fall but is now leading the Cats in Houston. He shot a +1 (73) in the 1st round and is -2 so far in the 2nd. Heusel started well and was -2 for a long time in the 1st round but finished with a double and 3 bogies for a 75. Our 1st round scores were Hoyeau-73, Heusel--75, Buisson--75, Brian Comegys--77, and Jamie Lewis--77. Carson Grigsby also shot 77 as an individual. So far in the 2nd round Hoyeau is -2, Heusel is even, Buisson is +1, Comegys is +1 and Lewis is +2. Grigsby is +1. So +12 as a team in round 1 but even as a team so far in round 2. Let's see if we can close.

On the stats side--we finished the 1st round in 4th place in par 3 scoring (+2, very good), last in par 4 scoring (16th), and 3rd in par 5 scoring (-9) which was good. Hoyeau just got another birdie and has 5 birdies in 8 holes for his 2nd round.

My stats count was off. Those are current stats thru 9 holes of the 2nd round. So good stats except for the par 4's where we are currently +28 counting all 6 of our players.

Hoyeau just eagled a par 4 to go -5 for the round and he has 2 par 5's yet to score. We could pick up some shots on the next couple of holes.

I was disappointed in the first round results but maybe we can move up considerably in round 2. Surprised at Carson's score. Thought he would be a regular. Our new French golfer sounds really intriguing. Could he be another great one like a former player from France who won an individual Championship when at ACU. Our opening round was apparently next to the worst score in the tournament, just two shots better than UIW's 302. Wonder what happened to cause such a collapse?

Hoyeau now -6 for the round and Heusel is -1. Buisson just double bogeyed to go +4 but as it stands right now his score won't count. Comegys and Lewis are +2.

Grigsby need to be more consistent. This round he birdied 3 in a row to get to -1, then promptly bogeyed 3 in a row to go back to +2. In the 6 round qualifier for playing this tourney he was over 20 shots behind Heusel (who led the qualifying) out at Fairway Oaks, which I think is Carson's home course.

Hoyeau finishes with a -4 (68). Comegys finishes with a +1 (73). Lewis finishes with a +2 (74). Waiting on Heusel who is -1 with one to play. Buisson still +4 with one to play. His score will not count. We are -2 as a team with Heusel still out. Passes a lot of teams in the 2nd round. Went from 15th to 10th.

Heusel birdies his last hole for a -2 (70). Team finishes -3 for the round. We need more of this kind of scoring.

Doesn't look like we're going to make a run today. Almost halfway thru the round and we're at +1 for the day. We do have the easier front side to play so maybe something special can happen. Currently 3 players at even par--Heusel, Hoyeau, and Comegys and Lewis at +1. Buisson is +3.

Starting to go south on us. 4 of our 6 golfers bogey a par 3 that's no more than a wedge or 9-iron for these guys and then no birdies for the counting scores on the 2 par 5's.

This is tough to hear. I had very high hopes for the guys this year. Maybe we can settle down as the schedule plays out.

If golf was like basketball or football where the playing field (court) is always the same and all you have to plan for is your opponent, then settling down could be a difference maker. The problem with golf is that every tourney is contested on a different type course and every day pin placements and weather and course conditions change. Our schedule is beyond hard this year with tourneys on very difficult courses with very strong fields. Also, unlike the aforementioned sports, you can't sub for a player who is in over his head, having a bad day, not feeling well, etc. In our favor, it looks like we have 9 young men with talent. Hopefully the weather in Abilene will allow them to get lots of rounds under their belts and an analysis of where they need to improve will help them become more consistent. You always hope that the "cream will rise to the top" and that 5 guys will separate themselves from the pack by the conference tourney. Before this tourney I would have said we had 4 guys we could count on (Heusel, Buisson, Grigsby and Diomede) but this week turns that thinking around. Diomede didn't qualify in the top 6, so he didn't make the trip. Buisson and Grigsby did not perform particularly well. Lewis has always been on the outside looking in until the fall when he did alright. Hoyeau has certainly earned a place for the next tourney (and I had no clue he would do that). Jackson and Spanjer are question marks. Right now only Heusel has a place guaranteed. Coach Shaw told me that Heusel and Buisson were out front but places 3-7 were pretty even in qualifying. Qualifying for the next tourney (Cabo--with numerous top 50 ranked teams) will very interesting. A tidbit to consider was that most of the teams we played this week are southern teams who have been able to practice and play much more than our kids have and several had already played a tournament, so we were behind to start with.

And every golfer approaches their game differently. Some will cut the corner on a par 5 because they know they can hit a slight draw with a long iron, hybred, or wood or they can cut a corner and not come up short. But these tendancies often are the cause of a high score on a hole where a slight miss turns into OB or unplayable. We have all been there. What I don't get is par fours being our worst holes. These often are less a test of deception than a test of setting up your approach shot. Something seems off with our par fours. Are we over agressive, or what? Since we play par threes well, I don't think it is long irons into long par 4s but I have not followed our guys around a course so I am clueless.
