An impressive thing is how young this team is. No seniors and a bunch of Freshmen. Wow, they could mature into a powerhouse.

1 sr, 3 jrs, 1 soph and 4 fr--I believe I was just looking at the scores on the ACU Sport page and the athletes they mentioned and they were all very early except for one senior that I mistook for a Junior. The future looks positive.

At Houston there was 1 team ranked in the top 50 (Southern Mississippi at #49) whom we tied for 9th place. In Cabo, our next tourney, we will face #1 Vanderbilt, #2 Auburn, #4 Arizona State, #5 Stanford, #6 Texas Tech, #7 Florida, #12 Tennessee, #14 Florida St, #17 Oklahoma St, #18 Alabama, #19 Arizona, #20 Baylor, #44 Arkansas. Also in the field are Houston, Rice, and ACU. So, quite an upgrade in opponents and probably the best field assembled in college golf this year before the national tourney.

I didn't realize Texas Tech was such a golf power. Maybe golf can be like football and pick up some of their drop downs that don't quite make the cut.

Not to argue (I understand the gist of your thinking; they're good so maybe they could share their wealth) but I disagree. We don't need Tech dropdowns. Coach Shaw is building a quality program with quality kids. If a good player doesn't fit somewhere but ACU is a fit, then good (Brian Choe is a good example) but hunting kids who can't make the starting team is a waste of time and resources. When our school is as attractive as Tech and our athletics brand (golf in this post) is as strong as Tech's, we'll compete and beat them with our own recruits. By the way, 3 years ago the common theme on this board was that we couldn't recruit or attract the superior athletes to play football at ACU. Last year coach Patterson came in and turned that theme on its ear. 3 and 4 star athletes dot our lineup now. The same is happening in golf. You saw the results at conference last year and this new freshman crew may well take us to new heights. 2nd by the way--I know we were in the mix for a grad transfer from a top 20 program this spring. Coach Shaw wanted to add an experienced player to be with our youngsters. It didn't work out (that's why there are just 9 on the roster this spring) but maybe next fall.

Excellent post Bogey! Also remember, Abilene was at one time a power house for high school golfers. I think a big reason was the combination of two things: First, a very reasonable course at the old Fairway Oaks (which had in the book, "Courses of the PGA Tour," two of the hardest of 18 holes on the PGA tour (numbers 10 and 17)) and larger greens to demand a decent short game. And second, our weather provides high winds and a range of conditions. Kids growing up in light wind climates really struggle with higher winds. Players who adapt their games to play in about any weather have a huge advantage. I don't see why we cannot return to a hotbed of competitive golfers with Coach Shaw bringing in talent and our guys playing a decent course in varying weather.

Not taking Buisson to Cabo. Diomede taking his place. Heusel, Hoyeau, Grigsby, Comegys are our other players. One good thing--Tech's #1 player Aberg (and #1 collegiate player in the US) will not be there. He is playing in the AP Invitational and doing quite well.

Karson Grigsby starts his day with a double bogey, 2 triple bogeys and a quad on his 1st 5 holes. How can that be? Needless to say, his score is not a counting score. Heusel even, Comegys even, Hoyeau is +2 with a double and Diomede is +4 with 2 doubles. Team is currently T-11.

6 triples or worse, so far. We are now in last place and Brian Comegys is still -1. Diomede and Grigsby were not ready to play in this environment.

I realize this is a very strong field, but something is wrong if we are the cellar dweller. Looking at the scores there has to be a mental or approach problem with some on the team. I can understand a blow-up hole, maybe a couple, but something is off when you stack up so many unrealistic holes. A little discipline with the way a course is laid out can minimize triples or worse so what is the problem???

Just wierd. We shoot one shot higher in the 2nd round than we did in the 1st round but cut down on the really big scores. Nothing over a double bogey but we had 9 of them. It's the fluctuations in score that really bother me. Comegys 73 to 84. Heusel 75 to 83. Diomede 84 to 72. Hoyeau 81 to 77 and then Grigsby 82 to 80. We have to be better than this. Hopefully Buisson, Jackson and maybe Lewis will get to play the next tourney to get a feel for what this team should be. The freshmen will struggle to be consistent at times but I expect so much more for upper classmen like Heusel, Diomede, and Jackson.

Our best day of the tourney with four players in the 70's. Diomede leads again with a 72. Hoyeau and Grigsby with 75's and Comegys a 76. Our #1 player had another horrid scoring day with a 86. Our 3rd round score of +14 is 13 shots better than day 1. In stats we finish in last place. We were 13th in par 3 scoring, 14th in par 4 scoring and 14th in par 5 scoring. We were dead last (15th) in number of birdies made. Reminds me of some of the teams I was on during my first 3 years. It's only up from here. Grand Canyon Invitational next week in Phoenix.
