The Optimist article quotes DeLeon as saying he will look at four criteria" 1 A strong Christain 2. Structure and discipline 3. Excellent recruiting skills 4. "Most likely," someone with Texas ties. It was in the ACU Optimist That's it! Thanks!

This isn't ACU of the 1940s.

And on top of that...who are any of us to judge 'how strong' of a Christian someone is. Give me a break. Judging someone's faith on a fan message board is ridiculous. A coach hasn't even been named.

Give me a devout follower of Christ regardless of denominational affiliation and I am happy. Above all else I want someone who walks the walk and is a living example of Christian manhood for your young men.

This isn't ACU of the 1940s. It's still the 1940's for faculty appointments, which require Church of Christ membership. Not for staff positions though, including coaches.

I understand ACU and the message it sends and that there are certain standards to uphold and certain beliefs that are valued and expected. At the same time, I don't think it's fair to assess someone's coaching ability based on their faith and I didn't think it was fair for this thread to turn in to that.
I also understand what Catholicism is not.
But if a coach can win games and set a good example and encourage these men to be better people as well as better football players then so be it.

I think faith is very important part of this process! That is why ACU is a private school and why CT and KC were able to do the things they did in the lives of you men!! To teach them what a Christian man is supposed to look like!! That is what built this program and if the new guy doesn't continue those values and the teachings of Christ then we have missed the mark and are headed down the wrong road!! We have talked about all of the things that ACU doesn't have that other Universities in the Southland (Scholarships, budget, ect) but this was the one thing that was different that they used to sell parents of recruits on!! I found this article this week and immediately thought of this hire. I hope you all will take a moment and read it. It is great insight but one of the best in the business. He doesn't talk about the faith component, but he does address what is trending in athletics these days. www.thenation.com/article/soul-men-coach-pop-and-cornel-west

I just know that Catholicism ain't exactly a stones throw from the Restoration Movement. This made me laugh out loud. Very true. Did you intend a pun when you said "a stones throw," from the Restoration movement, aka the Stone-Campbell movement? We attend a C of C here in Abilene that is celebrating Advent. Advent. We have Christmas trees in the auditorium. Candle lighting. Advent sermons. No vestments for the priest...ooops...minister though. Yet. Kind of a stretch for me. More so for my wife who grew up in a more "orthodox" C of C family than me. I can't imagine what poor Alexander Campbell would think.
