This is really good news. This recruiting class really needed another OL. One thing for sure, our coaches aren't just recruiting warm bodies. They seem to only be willing to bring in high quality talent. I am very excited to see this OL over the next few years. Lots of talent and lots of size.

Freshman - Laws, Anderson RS Freshman - Melde, Baughman, King, Thigpen Soph - Rieken, Wall, Hisler, Mayfield (if he uses a medical redshirt then might as well consider him a RS Freshman)
Throw in Valladolid who has apparently impressed and that's a deep and bright future. My only concern is playing time for some of those guys. As a fan I'm excited because that is a lot of young competition to fend off for playing time and the best of the bunch should surely create a solid line. But at the same time, I hope guys don't see it as too much competition if they don't get to see the field right away.

Very good points and you've not counted Shipley and Ngungatau (already signed but not sealed and delivered).

I saw a quick video from Shipley in high school playing 7 on 7. The kid has hands and is athletic. I wonder if they utilize his size this year as a lineman, then let him work through offseason to trim down to work as a TE in the spring. It seems to me that he wants to play TE. Coming in as a true freshman from a P5 program, would he be too prideful to accept a redshirt? Would be curious to hear from an insider what they know. I would imagine any kid that has once caught passes or scored TD's wants the chance to do that more often...I also want to hear why he transferred so early in to the fall after enrolling early last spring. How would we view it if Tryce Prince left for Midwestern St. two weeks in to fall camp?

If he desires to play at next level it will be off line in my view. He will only get bigger in college and while athletic for his size for sure, he will never get open at that size at the D1 level or beyond. Very seldom do kids lose weight. He has the potential to be very athletic lineman, which could set him up for next level

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm all for him playing on the line. Just fishing around for ideas on him coming to ACU. I was doing some searching online and found three different articles discussing LSU and the 'big cat' drill (Oklahoma drill)...Shipley, as an early enrolled true freshman pitted against DEs and MLBs never lost but resulted in a 'draw' each time. Impressive to me.

I doubt that the change in position bothered him. He only caught 4 passes his senior year. He got attention because of his ability to block and his size. My theory is one of culture. A nice kid who went to a Christian high school until his senior year from a fine family might well have been completely out of place. Something is going on at LSU. They have had 3 offensive linemen transfer this summer.
I don't think pride will be a problem. He comes from a family and extended family with extensive college football experiences. I can guess that his dad would not allow him to be a diva.

As long as we are throwing around ideas.....
TE for this year. No redshirt. Utilize his existing skill set instead of teaching him to play as a back up tackle.
Think about it. Jamie Walker started as a WR and is still developing his skill as a blocker. Ennis started as a QB and is learning to block.
Meanwhile, Shipley played TE in HS and went through spring and most of the fall camp as a TE at LSU used as blocking TE. Why not use his skills in situationally? Imagine a 300 pound TE who serves in effect as a 6th lineman to provide pass protection and run-blocking for DeAndre, Herschel, Randy, and Adrian.....Oh, and just for fun, visualize a 300 pounder catching an occasional pass and turning it upfield.
Just throwing another idea into the mix.

For sure the depth is looking better. Sad that Funk will be leaving.

Just for humoring a died-in-the-wool proof reader--Andren is a first name, s/b Anderson to match all the other last names on here. This depth looks extremely good and again I will mention one of the Ngungatau brothers who will be a 20-21 yr old freshman next year.

Right you are Bogey. And, because of the Mormon mission rule, the Ngungutau brothers WILL be 20-21 year old freshmen, their NCAA clock does not begin until after the mission. If they had decided to come to ACU for a year and then go on their mission, the clock would have been halted for the time they were on their mission. That also applies to military service to the U.S. - it also stops the NCAA clock from running. Also, medical redshirts can extend the 5-year clock.
I think the 5-year clock is keeping Codey Funk from being able to play for ACU next year. I imagine ACU applied for an extension for Codey, not sure what basis was used. The NCAA will sometimes grant a non-medical extension. Medical extensions are far more common. Hopefully, a medical extension will keep Riley Mayfield in the purple and white for three more seasons.

I only included one of the brothers on the OL, since I believe the other plays DT.
